Someone searching Google on a phone, the way most customers look for a local small business

Most Small Business Websites Look Fine and Still Get No Enquiries

You paid for a website. It looks tidy on a laptop. And the phone still isn’t ringing.

Usually it isn’t the design. It’s that the site was never built around the few things a customer needs before they get in touch: what you do, where you do it, what it costs, and proof you’ve done it before. Add a slow mobile page and a contact form buried at the bottom, and people leave before they ever reach it.

Search makes it worse. Google’s page experience guidance says Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems, and that pages should be served securely and display well on mobile. A site that fails those basics is fighting uphill against competitors that don’t.

If you already have a site, it’s worth checking the signs your website needs a redesign before you spend again.

What’s Included

What’s Included in Our Small Business Website Design

Every package is built on WordPress using the same process as our wider web design services. The difference between them is how many pages you need, not how well the site is built. Here’s what goes into a website for small business owners who need it to produce enquiries, not just exist.

Built Mobile-First

Most people find a local business on a phone, so we design for the small screen first and check every page on mobile, tablet and desktop before launch.

A Page for Each Thing You Sell

One page per service, written the way people search for it, so Google has something specific to rank and visitors don’t have to hunt through a single long homepage.

Easy Ways to Get in Touch

Click-to-call, WhatsApp and a short enquiry form on every page, placed where people actually decide to contact you rather than at the very bottom.

Speed and Core Web Vitals

Compressed images, clean code and caching, with Core Web Vitals checked before and after launch because Google uses them in its ranking systems.

An SEO Foundation From Day One

Page titles, headings, internal links and schema markup set up properly, plus Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 connected so you can see what’s working.

Found on Google Maps

We make sure your name, address and phone number match your Google Business Profile exactly, which is what Google checks when it decides who appears in the local pack.

Selling Online as Well?

If you need to take payments and manage stock, that’s ecommerce website design rather than a brochure site, and it’s priced separately.

Website Builder or Web Designer: What’s Best for a Small Business?

There is no single best website builder for a small business. Squarespace, Wix and Shopify’s site builder all work, and if you have more time than money and need something online this week, a builder is a sensible start.

What a builder costs you is less obvious. You become the web designer: the layout, the writing, the mobile checks, the page structure, the technical SEO, the updates. Most owners get the first version live, then never touch it again, and the site slowly stops matching the business.

The other difference is control. Builders limit what you can change in page structure, schema and loading speed. WordPress doesn’t, which is why we use it. You can still log in and edit your own text, but the parts that affect rankings and enquiries aren’t locked away.

Our Honest Test

If the website is a business card, use a builder. If it’s meant to bring in work, pay someone once to build it properly.

Our Process

How We Build a Website for a Small Business, Step by Step

You always know which stage you’re in. Most of your effort lands early on: one call, a few decisions and your content. After that you review real pages in a browser rather than a flat mockup, and nothing goes live until you’ve signed it off.

01

Discovery and Research

Your business goals, target audience, and competitors are thoroughly discussed during a free discovery call.

02

Strategy and Sitemap

The sitemap is mapped out, page structures are planned, conversion goals are defined, and the SEO keyword strategy is finalised. Nothing is built until the plan is approved.

03

Design and Wireframing

Wireframes are shared for feedback so the layout, flow, and messaging can be refined before development begins. Your input is encouraged at every stage.

04

WordPress Development

The approved design is brought to life on WordPress. Clean, optimised code is written. Responsive behaviour is tested across all screen sizes.

05

Content and SEO Integration

Compelling copy is integrated across every page. Keyword-optimised headings, meta descriptions, image alt text, and internal links are all configured.

06

Testing and Quality Assurance

Every link, form, page, and feature is tested thoroughly. Mobile responsiveness is verified. Load speed is benchmarked. Nothing is launched until everything works flawlessly.

07

Launch and Handover

Your website is launched on your chosen domain with SSL, hosting, and security all configured. Full CMS training is provided so you feel confident managing your own content.

08

Ongoing Support and Growth

The relationship doesn’t end at launch. Ongoing maintenance, updates, and SEO packages are available to keep your website performing and your business growing.

Why Choose Anchor

Why Small Businesses Choose Anchor

From experience, Nouman: before Anchor I spent years as a freelance WordPress developer, delivering hundreds of projects for clients in the UK, Belgium, France and the USA. The pattern was always the same: the small sites that worked were the ones where the owner could reach me directly and decisions took hours, not weeks. That’s how Anchor still runs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know About Small Business Website Design With Anchor

Questions? Answers Are Right Here

The questions owners ask us most, answered straight. If yours isn’t here, message us on WhatsApp and you’ll get a real answer, not a sales call.

How much is a small business website?

Our websites are £499 for 3–5 pages, £799 for 7–14 pages with a year’s hosting included, and £999 for a fully custom build with unlimited pages. All prices exclude VAT, and the fee is fixed before we start. For a wider view of the market, read how much a website costs in the UK.

Most sites take 7 to 21 days. The variable is revision speed: you may want time to check the designs and get them exactly right, and that’s fine. If you need it faster, we offer a 3-day delivery option, quoted on request by email, phone or the enquiry form.

Yes. Every site is built on WordPress with a normal CMS login, so you can edit text, swap images and add pages without touching code. If you would rather not, website maintenance covers updates, backups and content changes from £29 a month.

No, and nobody honestly can. Google’s own guidance on hiring an SEO says plainly that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. What we do is build the foundations rankings depend on, then measure what happens in Search Console and report it.

The build includes an SEO foundation: titles, headings, schema, a sitemap and Search Console. That gets you indexed, not ranked for competitive terms. For the searches that actually bring work in, you need ongoing SEO services, from £199 a month rolling monthly.

Most sole traders do well with 3–5: home, about, one or two service pages and contact. If you offer several distinct services, 7–14 pages lets each one have its own page, which is what Google needs in order to rank you for each service separately.

A brochure site can take deposits through a payment link, but if you’re selling products you want a proper shop. That’s a different build: from £499 for up to 10 products, with Stripe or PayPal checkout, UK shipping and VAT set up for you.

Yes. We’re based in Birmingham and a lot of our work is web design Birmingham businesses ask for, but projects have been delivered across the UK and in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, the USA and Saudi Arabia. Everything runs over WhatsApp, email, phone and video calls.
